Face-Care Routine: In What Order Should You Apply Products?

Routine visage : dans quel ordre appliquer ses soins ?

An effective face-care routine does not need ten products. The simplest order is cleanse, apply the treatment or serum you actually need, moisturise and then protect the skin from the sun in the morning. At night, the priority is to remove makeup and sunscreen properly before using targeted care.

Morning routine: product order

1. Gentle cleansing if needed

If your skin tolerates it well, you can use a gentle cleanser in the morning. Some dry or sensitive skins prefer only a rinse or very light cleansing.

2. Serum or targeted treatment

Serum is not mandatory. It becomes useful when it addresses a specific goal such as hydration, radiance, pigmentation, blemishes or visible ageing.

3. Moisturiser

It helps maintain water in the skin and improves comfort. Choose the texture for your skin type rather than relying only on marketing claims.

4. Sunscreen

Finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. It is the most important step if you want to limit photoageing and dark spots.

Evening routine: the simplest order

1. Remove makeup and sunscreen

If you wear heavy makeup or resistant sunscreen, double cleansing can be practical. It is not compulsory for everyone.

2. Gentle cleanser

Clean without chasing a stripped, squeaky feeling. Tightness after washing may mean the product or frequency is too harsh.

3. Targeted active or serum

Apply the main treatment in your routine. Avoid layering several irritating actives simply because they are popular.

4. Moisturiser

Finish with a cream or texture suited to your level of dryness and comfort.

Is serum really essential?

No. A serum is a cosmetic format, not a compulsory step. A routine can be excellent without one if cleansing, moisturising and sun protection are already covered. Add a serum when it delivers an active or texture that genuinely serves your goal.

How many products do you need?

As few as necessary to meet your goal without unnecessary irritation. A simple routine is easier to follow and makes it easier to identify the cause of a reaction.

How long should you wait between products?

You usually do not need to wait several minutes between layers. Let each product settle enough for the next one to apply comfortably, unless the brand gives specific instructions.
