Fine hair can lack volume even when it is perfectly healthy. Fibre diameter is largely determined by genetics, so the goal of a good routine is not to permanently “transform” the hair but to create more body, lightness and movement without weighing down the roots.
1. Choose a lightweight shampoo
On fine hair, a very rich formula can quickly flatten the roots. A volumising or cosmetically thickening shampoo can help create more body. For more detail, read our guide to the best thickening shampoo for fine hair.
2. Focus shampoo on the scalp
Work mainly at the roots and scalp, then let the foam run through the lengths while rinsing. This cleanses without unnecessarily loading the ends.
3. Keep richer care on the lengths
Masks, oils and conditioners placed too close to the roots can reduce volume. Apply them mainly to mid-lengths and ends and adjust the amount to your hair density.
4. Rinse thoroughly
Product residue can make hair feel flat or greasy more quickly. Thorough rinsing is especially important on fine hair.
5. Lift the roots while drying
Drying has a major effect on immediate volume. Move the roots in different directions with your fingers or a brush and avoid flattening the hair against the scalp while it dries.
6. Use volumising mousse sparingly
A lightweight mousse can add hold without making the fibre stiff. RevitaLash® Volume Enhancing Foam can be applied to damp hair after washing to help with styling and volume.
7. Do not confuse fine hair with loss of density
You can have fine individual hairs but lots of them, or you can have true thinning of the overall hair mass. If your density clearly decreases or shedding increases, read our guide to hair loss and its causes.
A simple routine for fine hair
Start with a lightweight shampoo, add care only to the lengths when needed, rinse thoroughly and finish with a light volumising styling product. With fine hair, less product often gives more movement.
